Jets Trading DL Leonard Williams To Giants

According to Adam Schefter, the Jets are trading DL Leonard Williams to the Giants.

The Jets will receive a third-round pick this year and a fifth-round pick in 2021 from the Giants for Williams. Schefter adds the 2021 pick can become a fourth-round pick if he signs an extension with the Giants, while the Jets are also paying $4 million of Williams’ $6 million salary this year.

Williams’ contract is set to expire at the end of the season, so the Giants will have the rest of 2019 to take a look at the former first-round pick and make their pitch for him to stay in New York.

Williams, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Jets back in 2015. He was in the final year of a four-year, $18.6 million rookie contract and was set to earn a base salary of $2,975,574 in 2018 when the Jets picked up his fifth-year option last April.

Williams will make a base salary of $14.2 million for the 2019 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Williams will free up $14.2 million of available cap space while creating no dead money.

In 2019, Williams has appeared in all seven games for the Jets and has 20 total tackles, no sacks and one pass defense.
