Latest On Patriots, A.J. Brown, Stefon Diggs & Romeo Doubs

Update:

The Patriots agreed to terms with Packers WR Romeo Doubs on Tuesday, addressing their need at receiver at least partially.

However, Karen Guregian says she was told this will not preclude the Patriots from continuing to pursue a trade for Eagles WR A.J. Brown.

NFL Media’s Cameron Wolfe has a big update on the Patriots’ plans at receiver this offseason. New England is looking for a new No. 1 wideout after releasing Stefon Diggs in a cost-cutting maneuver.

A.J. Brown

Wolfe says the Patriots will remain in the mix for Eagles WR A.J. Brown despite no deal coming together so far. Philadelphia’s asking price has been too rich for the Patriots, which Wolfe confirms, but notes things could change in the coming weeks. This will be a situation to continue to monitor.

The Patriots have been linked to Packers WR Romeo Doubs, per Wolfe, but he gets the sense their preference would be to land Brown.

The Patriots remain a logical connection, especially with Brown’s relationship with HC Mike Vrabel. But New England continues to have a bad case of sticker shock with Philadelphia’s asking price for Brown of a first and a second-round pick, or something along those lines.

For what it’s worth, the Patriots are one of the teams Brown has expressed interest in playing for besides the Eagles.

As for Diggs, Wolfe asked around to see if the Patriots would be open to bringing him back at a lower price, but got the sense that New England has mostly closed that door.

Diggs, 32, is a former fifth-round pick of the Vikings back in 2015. He was in the final year of his rookie contract when he agreed to a five-year extension worth $72 million with the Vikings in 2018

The Vikings traded Diggs to the Bills in 2020 for a package of draft picks, including a first-round selection.

Diggs was set to make base salaries of $11.775 million and $11.85 million over the final two years of his deal in 2022 and 2023 when Buffalo signed him to a four-year, $104 million extension.

He was due base salaries of $18.5 million and $18 million over the next two seasons when the Bills traded him to the Texans for a 2025 second-round pick. Houston reworked his contract to give him a raise and make him an unrestricted free agent in 2025.

Diggs played out that contract and signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Patriots in 2025. He was released after just one season, though.

In 2025, Diggs appeared in all 17 games for the Patriots and recorded 85 catches on 102 targets for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.

Brown, 28, is a former second-round pick of the Titans back in 2019. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $5,506,368 rookie contract before the Titans traded him to the Eagles for a first and third-round pick.

He then re-signed with the Eagles on a four-year, $100 million contract that included $57 million guaranteed.

However, the Eagles later signed Brown to a three-year, $96 million extension that includes $84 million guaranteed.

In 2025, Brown appeared in 15 games for the Eagles and caught 78 passes on 121 targets for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns.

Doubs, 25, was selected in the fourth round by the Packers out of Nevada in the 2022 NFL Draft. He just finished the final year of a four-year, $4,343,916 rookie contract that included a $683,916 signing bonus and made a base salary of $3.4 million under the Proven Performance Escalator.

Doubs is testing the market for the first time as an unrestricted free agent in 2026

In 2025, Doubs appeared in 16 games for the Packers and caught 55 passes on 85 targets for 724 yards and six touchdowns.

We have him included in our Top 100 2026 NFL Free Agents list.

We’ll have more regarding Brown and the Patriots as the news is available.
