NFC East Notes: Cowboys, Giants, Redskins

Cowboys

Cowboys HC Jason Garrett addressed the release of WR Dez Bryant Tuesday evening.

“It’s a challenging situation. A lot of different factors go into these kind of decisions,” Garrett said, per Jon Machota. “The guidepost for all this is what’s in the best interest of the Dallas Cowboys. We wish Dez nothing but the best going forward. He’s a special guy. I love him.

“I love Dez Bryant. He’s one of the great players to ever play for this franchise. It’s certainly an emotional time. It wasn’t an easy decision to make. … We’re gonna move forward, Dez is gonna move forward, and hopefully we’ll have a lifelong relationship.”

• Cowboys TE Jason Witten reiterated that he plans to return for the 2018 season and has no interest in taking a job in television: “Hopefully I can play until I’m 40. Just taking it one year at a time.” (Jon Machota)
• Regarding the release of Bryant, Witten said: “Friday was an emotional day for all of us. … I don’t know what all that [Garrett guy talk] is about. … There’s really nothing there.” (Jon Machota)

Giants

ESPN’s Todd McShay said Wednesday Penn State RB Saquon Barkley being selected by the Giants “feels inevitable.”

“I’ve heard very strongly that there are important people in the building who believe in Saquon Barkley and being a physical, run-first team,” McShay said, per Tom Rock. “Barkley can be the face of the team for the next 10 years. It feels inevitable that Saquon Barkley is going to be a NY Giant.”

Redskins

• John Keim reports that the Redskins are hosting Washington DT Vita Vea for a pre-draft visit on Wednesday.
• According to Keim, the Redskins have shown “strong interest” Vea throughout the draft process along with Alabama DT Da’Ron Payne.
• Georgia RB Sony Michel took a pre-draft visit to Washington on Wednesday to meet with the Redskins. (John Keim)
