The Green Bay Packers announced Wednesday that theyโve placed S Sean Richardson on injured reserve, and promoted TE Justin Perillo to their active roster.
Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently reported that Richardson has a herniated disk in his neck for the second time in his career and is out for the season.
Silverstein adds that Richardsonโs neck injury could actually bring his NFL career to an end, given that he sustained a similar injury back in 2012 that required fusion surgery of the C-5 and C-6 vertebrae.
Itโs worth mentioning that the Packers have been very conservative with neck injuries in the past, which prevented them from clearing S Nick Collins and TE Jermichael Finley after they had fusion surgeries of their own. However, Richardsonโs injury occurred further down in his spinal chord, and was deemed to be less of a concern long term.
Richardson, 25, re-signed with the Packers back in March after Green Bay elected to match the Raidersโ restricted offer of one-year, $2.55 million.
This season, Richardson has appeared in three games and recorded four tackles for the Packers.
