Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Rams asked restricted free agent DB Blake Countess to take a pay cut from the $2 million he was set to make under his restricted tender.
However, Countess declined and the Rams are now waiving him, according to Rapoport.
Rapoport adds that the door is still open to Countess returning to the Rams if he clears waivers.
It’s surprising to see a team cut a restricted free agent who has already signed his tender just a few weeks later.
Countess, 23, was taken in the sixth round of this year’s NFL draft by the Eagles. He was, unfortunately, cut loose coming out of the preseason and later signed on to the Rams practice squad.
The Rams placed an original-round tender on Countess back in March and he signed the tender a few weeks ago.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Countess will free up $2.025 million of available cap space while creating $1 million in dead money.
In 2018, Countess appeared in all 16 games for the Rams, recording nine total tackles, one interception and two pass defenses.
