Update: The Athletic’s Connor Hughes reports that while the Jets have made a call to the Redskins regarding LT Trent Williams, they’re “not the frontrunner” at this point.

Garafolo explains that teams often do this heading into the draft to ensure that they have full control of the situation.
According to Josina Anderson, a source says there’s “an opportunity to have something done shortly” regarding a potential trade of Redskins LT Trent Williams.
The source adds there have been “some really good, constructive” conversations and there is hope to get a deal done soon.
According to Ian Rapoport, the Redskins have discussed a potential trade of LT Trent Williams with multiple teams as the draft draws closer.
The need to get Williams a physical in the current environment adds another logistical hurdle that Rapoport says Washington is trying to work through in order to get value out of Williams in this draft.
The Browns were mentioned yesterday as a team that’s still potentially looking at bringing in Williams. There’s a number of other teams that need help at tackle that could be looking at Williams if they miss on one of the highly regarded prospects in this draft class.
Former Redskins GM Scot McCloughan recently made the case during radio interview for a team acquiring Williams even over drafting one of the top offensive tackle prospects.
โHeโd be the first tackle taken this year in the draft, hands down, . . . even at his age,โ McCloughan said, via the Washington Post. โYou know what you got. You bring him in, youโre going to get three to four years out of him, and itโs going to be Pro Bowl years. Heโs legit one of the top five tackles in the NFL, hands down, right now. โฆ Heโs a great guy and a great teammate. Players love being around him.โ
Washington has been reportedly asking for a second-round pick as a starting point in negotiations for Williams since giving his agent permission to seek a trade.
However, the Redskins maintain a trade has been slowed by Williams’ desire for a new contract. The veteran still has one year left on his deal with a $12.5 million base salary that is not guaranteed.
Williams’ agent refuted the notion that Williams’ contract demands are impacting a potential deal.
Williams, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Redskins back in 2010. He currently in the final year of his five-year, $66 million contract that includes $43.25 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $12.5 million for the 2020 season.
According to OverTheCap.com, trading or releasing Williams will free up $12.5 million of available cap space while creating $2 million in dead money.
In 2018, Williams started 13 games for the Redskins. Pro Football Focus rated Williams as the No. 21 tackle out of 80 qualifying players.
Weโll have more regarding Williams as the news is available.
