Update:
Ian Rapoport reports that Cowboys OC Kellen Moore is one of the top targets for the Boise State head coaching job. However, Moore hasn’t interviewed with his alma mater just yet.
Instead, Rapoport says Boise State would like to speak with Moore and it could possibly happen today. Rapoport confirms that Andy Avalos is a “key candidate” for the job.
Mike Prater of the Idaho Press reports that Cowboys OC Kellen Moore has interviewed for Boise State’s head coaching vacancy. According to Prater, Moore is among the candidates that have “high interest” in the job and he expects either Moore or Andy Avalos to be hired this week.
A source told Mike Fisher of SI.com earlier this week: “I would bet Kellen is (Boise State’s) first choice.’‘
Moore has obvious ties to Boise State and speculation connected him to their job almost immediately after it became available.
If Moore were to take the job, it’s likely Mike McCarthy would take over the Cowboys’ offense and play-calling in 2021.
Moore, 31, originally signed on with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State back in 2012. Detroit elected to move on from Moore at the start of the 2015 season and later signed on to the Cowboys’ practice squad.
Moore missed the entire 2016 season with a broken ankle but he later returned to Dallas. After being waived in 2017, the Cowboys added him to their practice squad for the remainder of the season.
From there, Moore made the decision to join the Cowboys as their QBs coach and end his playing career in 2018. Dallas later promoted him to offensive coordinator for the 2019 season and he retained the position this year, despite the coaching change.
In 2020, the Cowboys’ offense ranks No. 16 in total yards, No. 18 in points scored, No. 19 in rushing yards and No. 11 in passing yards.
