Titans Hire Mike Mularkey As Head Coach

Update:

The Tennessee Titans have already confirmed that Mike Mularkey has been hired as their head coach.

โ€œThe vision Mike presented for our football team during this search as well as the character, integrity, and leadership skills he displayed during the last two months of the season makes him the right coach for the Tennessee Titans,โ€ said Titans Controlling Owner and Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors Amy Adams Strunk.ย  โ€œMike is a quality coach and an outstanding person who will help us build this team the right way. He has experience as a head coach and a track record for developing young quarterbacks and dynamic offenses, and he also brings continuity for our franchise quarterback. We understand this may take time as we rebuild the roster and bring in new coaches for Mikeโ€™s staff, but we believe he has the experience and expertise to build a consistent winner.โ€

โ€œI am honored to be named the head coach of the Titans and I want to thank Amy, Kenneth, Steve and Jon for this opportunity,โ€ said Mularkey. โ€œI am going to give all that I have to make this team successful and make our city and fans proud. The last two months of the season were extremely valuable to understand our personnel and instill some of our values and standard of play, so we wonโ€™t be starting from scratch. With that as a basis, we will now be installing some new systems and bringing in new coaches and players to build on what we have started.ย  There is plenty of work to be done until we reach our goal, but myself, the coaches and the players are going to work tirelessly to get us there.โ€

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Titans are hiring Mike Mularkey as their head coach.

  • Albert Breer reports that twoย big reasons for hiring Mularkey are: 1) Ownership loves him 2), Maintains some stability for Marcus Mariota.

It’s a somewhat surprising move, given that Mularkey struggled as an interim head coach, and they could have waited for someone like Josh McDaniels to be available.

However, numerous reports said that Mularkey was the guy to watch for the job, as it was ownership’s preference.

Earlier in the day, a report said thatย Mularkey could receive a short-term extension and then begin the process of finding his next offensive coordinator, so that’s something to keep an eye on in the coming days.

Candidates who were also considered for the job include:ย Jaguars assistant HC Doug Marrone,ย Lions DC Teryl Austin,ย Patriots OC Josh McDaniels,ย Panthers DC Sean McDermottย and DC Ray Horton.

After replacing Ken Whisenhunt as the Titans’ head coach, Mularkey led to the Titans to a record of 2-7. His career record is 18-39 (31.6) over the course of four seasons with the Titans, Jaguars and Bills.
