Sources close to Saints HC Sean Payton tells Ian Rapoport of NFL Media “never say never” when it comes to him moving on next year.
According to Rapoport, executives believeย Payton isย searching for a landing spot in case he decides this is it for him in New Orleans.
Interestingly enough, Rapoport tosses out the Chargers as one team to keep an eye on for Payton, assuming of course that they move on from Mike McCoy as their head coach.
Rapoport adds thatย Payton has discussed this option privately.
Meanwhile, Albert Breer suggests which ever team relocates to Los Angeles and the Colts as potential jobs that could be of interest to Payton.
It’s worth mentioning that Payton has stressed to the media that he intends to remain in New Orleans and continue to build the Saints back into a contender.
However, there has been consistent speculation about him taking other jobs including the Dolphins.
Payton is under contract through the 2017 season, and makesย $8 million perย year with this agreement. However, reports haveย said that Payton’s contractย will not deter teams from approaching the Saints about a potential deal.
Payton, 51, has lead the Saints to a record ofย 84-53 (61.3 percent) including their only Super Bowl title over the course ofย eight-plus seasons inย New Orleans.
We’ll have more regarding Payton’s future with either the Saints or other NFL teams as the news is available.
