Joe Staley Officially Announces Retirement

Update:

49ers’ veteran LT Joe Staley officially announced that he is retiring from the NFL on Saturday.

Adam Schefter reports that 49ers’ veteran LT Joe Staley is expected to retire due to health concerns.

Schefter adds that Staley wanted to inform the 49ers “in a timely way” in order to help them find his replacement.

Now that San Francisco acquired Trent Williams from the Redskins on Saturday, Staley’s retirement shouldn’t come as a surprise.

John Keim of ESPN reported that the 49ers’ interest in Williams was tied to whether Staley retires.

Staley, 35, is a former first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2007. He has played all 12 seasons in San Francisco and was entering the final year of a six-year, $52.45 million contract when he agreed to a two-year, $27.6 million extension this past June.

He’s set to make base salaries of $10,550,000 and $11,300,000 over the next two years.

In 2019, Staley appeared in seven games for the 49ers, making seven starts at left tackle.
