Eagles Release DE Vinny Curry

Mike Garafolo reports that the Eagles are releasing DE Vinny Curry on Friday after he declined a pay cut at Philadelphia was unable to find a trade for him.

  • Adam Caplan points out that $5 million of Curry’s $9 million base salary would have become fully guaranteed on Sunday.

It was clear that Curry wasn’t going to be back with the Eagles for the 2018 season after they traded for Michael Bennett. Given the limited pool of pass rushers available right now, it would not be surprising to see Curry end up doing pretty well in terms of his next contract.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Curry to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Curry, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Eagles back in 2012. He signed a five-year, $47.25 million contract that included $23 million guaranteed with the Eagles back in 2016 and set to make base salaries of $9 million and $9.25 million over the next two years of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Curry will free up $5 million of available cap space while creating $6 million in dead money.

In 2017, Curry appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles and recorded 42 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 22 edge rusher out of 109 qualifying players.
