Browns Will Let LB Joe Schobert Depart In Free Agency

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that new Browns GM Andrew Berry met with linebacker Joe Schobert’s agent, Joe Panos, at the Combine and the two parties came away with the belief that he won’t be back with the team in 2020f.

A league source tells Cabot that the Browns are not willing to pay Schobert the $10 million or so he’s set to make in free agency.

Instead, Cabot mentions that Cleveland is planning to make a big investment in the offensive line this offseason.

The Browns are also expected to release veteran DE Olivier Vernon this offseason to create some extra cap room to work with.

Yesterday, Tom Silverstein and Jim Owczarski of PackersNews.com reported that the Packers are exploring what it would take to possibly sign Schobert.

Schobert, 26, was a fourth-round pick by the Browns out of Wisconsin back in 2016. He just finished out his four-year, $2.97 million rookie contract that included a $633,956 signing bonus.

Schobert is now in line to test the open market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career.

In 2019, Schobert appeared in all 16 games for the Browns and recorded 133 tackles, two sacks, and four interceptions, 13 pass defenses and forced two fumbles.

We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
