Adam Schefter of ESPN, citing a source close to the situation, reports that the attorneys for Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott have attempted to settle his case with the NFL and ultimately reduce his suspension from six games.
According to Schefter, it’s unclear how many games they have proposed to the NFL, but neither the league nor the NFLPA intends to settle this case at this time.
This fits with a prior report fromย David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, who mentioned that Elliott’s legal team and the NFL have discussed a potential settlement regarding his six-game suspension, butย “level of sincerity present in those previous discussions is open to debate.”
Last week, theย Second Circuit has granted Elliott’s motion for a brief administrative stay, which allows him to play today.
The Second Circuit has referred the emergency motion to a three-judge panel, so the stay is effective just for today’s game.
Elliott’s suspension continues to flip back and forth, but the good news is that we’re drawing closer to the end of this ongoing saga.
Elliott’s fate will be decided next week if the second circuit panel reverses Judge Katherine Polk Failla’s rejection of hisย restraining order.
Last week, judge Faillaย dissolved the temporary restraining order and denied the NFLPA and Elliott’sย motion, which meant that his six-game suspension had been reinstated by the judge. However, Elliott had the right to appeal and he was able to delay the process temporarily.
Elliott was accused of five incidents of domestic violence that took place over over the course of a six-day period in July 2016, which led to the NFL suspended him six games.
Elliott, 22, was taken with the No. 4 overall pick by the Cowboys back in May. He signed four-year contract worth $24,956,342, which includes a signing bonus of $16,350,068.
Elliott stands to make base salaries ofย $1.58 million (2017), $2.71 million (2018), and $3.85 million (2019) over the remainder of the contract.ย The agreement also includes a fifth-year option for the team to pick up in 2019.
In 2017, Elliott has appeared in seven games and rushed for 690 yards on 164 carries (4.2 YPC) to go along with 19 receptions for 210 yards receiving and eight total touchdowns.
We’ll have more regardingย Elliott as the news is available.
