Phil Dawson Signing One-Day Contract To Retire With Browns

The Cleveland Browns announced Thursday that veteran K Phil Dawson will sign a one-day contract to retire as a member of the team.

To have the opportunity to come back home and retire with the organization and the city that I love is incredibly meaningful to me,” said Dawson. “It only seems right to have the opportunity to do this with the fans that have been so good to me and my family.”

“We are thrilled that Phil Dawson wanted to come back and retire as a Cleveland Brown,” said Dee and Jimmy Haslam. “He epitomizes the characteristics that we look for in our players – hardworking, professional, consistent and he was a pillar in the community. He is a great example for all current and future Browns.”

Dawson said recently that he had “some back-and-forth” with teams looking for a kicker, but it appears as though he felt it was best to call it a career.

Dawson, 44, signed on with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent back in 1998. He had a brief stint with the Patriots before joining the Browns for the 1999 season.

After 14 seasons with the Browns, Dawson joined the 49ers in 2013 and most recently played for the Cardinals.

For his career, Dawson converted 441 of 526 field goal attempts (83.8 percent) to go along with 518 of 531 extra point tries (97.6 percent) over the course of 20 seasons and 305 games. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2012.
