Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins “have interest” in Saints coach Sean Payton, and are at least expected to considerย Bengals OC Hue Jackson and UCLA HCย Jim Mora for their head-coaching vacancy.
There has been a lot of buzz that Payton could pursue other head-coaching opportunities next year, even though he isn’t a free agent.
Of course, the Saints would have to be willing to trade him in order for Payton to take another job, but with the team continuing to struggle, they may at least consider the idea of taking some draft compensation for their head coach.
Ian Rapoportย previously reported thatย if Payton wanted to be a coaching free agent after this year, theย Saintsย “would be inclined to let him out of his contract.”
Payton is under contract through the 2017 season, and makesย $8 million perย year with this agreement. However, reports haveย said that Payton’s contractย will not deter teams from approaching the Saints about a potential deal.
Payton, 51, has lead the Saints to a record ofย 84-53 (61.3 percent) including their only Super Bowl title over the course ofย eight-plus seasons inย New Orleans.
Jackson has been a popular name in regards to head-coaching vacancies, so it would not be surprising in the least to see him interview with the Dolphins.
We’ll have more regarding candidates for the Dolphins’ job as the news is available.
