The Browns mentioned earlier in the day that signing a veteran quarterback was a likely option for them this, as they prepare rookie Cody Kessler for the first start of his NFL career.
Whitehurst, 34, is a former third-round pick of the Chargers back in 2006. He spent four years in San Diego before playing for a number of teams including the Seahawks, Titans and most recently for the Colts.
In 2015, Whitehurst appeared in five games and threw for 150 yards while completing 50 percent of his passes to go along with one interception and no touchdowns for the Colts.
