Cardinals Release RB Chris Johnson

The Arizona Cardinals are releasing veteran RB Chris Johnson to make room for newly acquired RB Adrian Peterson, according to Adam Schefter.

It was clear that one of the Cardinal’s running backs was going to be on the outs now that they’ve added Peterson, and Johnson seemed like the most obvious candidate, considering that he hasn’t been very effective for them this year.

Johnson, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Titans back in 2008. After six years in Tennessee, Johnson signed on with the Jets for the 2014 season but spent just one year in New York before joining the Cardinals the following season.

Arizona elected to bring Johnson back on a one-year, $1.5 million contract last March and returned to the Cardinals on a one-year contract worth $1 million this past July. Johnson wound up being among the team’s final roster cuts coming out of the preseason but they brought him back a few weeks into the regular season.

In 2017, Johnson has appeared in four games and rushed for 114 yards on 45 carries (2.5 YPC) to go along with five receptions for 43 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
