Chargers Signing DB Jaylen Watkins

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media is reporting that the Chargers are signing former Eagles DB Jaylen Watkins to a one-year contract on Friday.

According to Garafolo, while Watkins can play cornerback, it’s likely he’ll play safety for the Chargers.

Watkins visited with the 49ers in recent weeks but left San Francisco without a deal.

Watkins, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Eagles back in 2014. He was waived at the start of the 2015 season and had a brief stint on the Bills’ practice squad before returning to the Eagles toward the end of the 2015 season.

Last year, the Eagles signed Watkins to a one-year exclusive rights deal. However, Philadelphia declined to tender him a restricted offer this offseason, which is why he was testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent.

In 2017, Watkins appeared in 12 games for the Eagles and recorded 17 tackles and no interceptions.
