The Indianapolis Colts announced that they have promoted QB Chad Kelly and WR Marcus Johnson from their practice squad and waived WR Deon Cain and DT Kyle Peko to make room for them.
Jacoby Brissett has since been ruled out, which means Kelly will serve as the backup to Brian Hoyer against the Dolphins.
It’s interesting that Indianapolis made the decision to waive Cain, who could be claimed off waivers on Monday.
Kelly, 25, is a former seventh-round pick of the Broncos back in 2017. He signed a four-year, $2.464 million contract that included a $64,270 signing bonus, but was waived in October of last year after being arrested on a charge of first-degree criminal trespassing.
The Colts waived Kelly after serving his two-game suspension before re-signing him to their practice squad soon after.
During his college career, Kelly threw for 6,858 yards while completing 63.9 percent of his passes to go along with 50 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
Cain, 23, is a former sixth-round pick of the Colts back in 2018. He’s in the second year of his four-year, $2,625,636 contract with the Colts and stands to make a base salary of $570,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2019, Cain has appeared in seven games for the Colts and caught four passes for 52 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
