According to Howard Balzer, the Indianapolis Colts brought in free agent WR DeAndre Smelter and TE Marcus Lucas for tryouts earlier this week.
Smelter, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the 49ers back in 2015. He was in the second year of his four-year, $2.28 million rookie contract when the 49ers waived him at the start of the 2016 season.
Smelter later signed on to the 49ers’ practice squad and has been on and off of the unit ever since.
In 2016, Smelter appeared in two games for the 49ers and caught one passes for 23 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
Lucas, 25, wound up signing on with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri back in back in 2014. He wound up spending his rookie year on the Panthers’ practice squad and later returned to Carolina on a future/reserve contract.ย However, the Panthers waived him at the start of the 2015 season.
Since then, Lucas has played for the Dolphins, Bears and Panthers before signing on to the Seahawks’ practice squad last year. Seattle signed Lucas to a futures deal last January only to eventually waive him from injured reserve with a settlement before the start of the regular season.
Lucas has yet to appear in an NFL game.
