ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that Cowboys owners Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have been moving slowly in regards to Jason Garrett’s status with the team out of an โabundance of care and respectโ for him.
According to Werder, the expectation is that this phase of the process will conclude soon with Garrett no longer being part of the organization. From there, Werder expects the Cowboys to begin interviewing candidates quickly thereafter.
Earlier in the day, Werder mentioned that people inside the Cowboys’ organization had begun to wonder if Garrett was going to have a role with the team in 2020 as head coach or in a different capacity, given how long the process has dragged out after the season.
Dallas and Garrett have already had a series of meetings since the season ended, even though the consensus belief has been that the Cowboys would be in the market for new head coach.
Garrett’s contract with the Cowboys is set to expire, which prevents Dallas from having to fire him.
Garrett, 53, began his NFL coaching career with the Dolphins back in 2005 as their quarterbacks coach. After two years in Miami, the Cowboys hired him as their offensive coordinator and he eventually worked his way up to head coach.
Over the course of his 10 years in charge of the Cowboys, Garrett has led the team to a record of 85-67 (55.3 percent), which includes three playoff appearances.
Weโll have more regarding Garrett and the Cowboys as the news is available.
