Cowboys executive VPย Stephen Jones confirmed that they’reย working onย a long-term contract extension with Cย Travis Frederick, via John Machota of the Dallas News.
Last week, Jones said that a new deal for Frederick was a possibility before the start of the upcoming season.
โTravis has been great for us,โ Jones said, via the Star-Telegram. โNot only is he a great football player on the field, he represents as [coach Jason Garrett] said what most of our guys what you want off the field. Heโs a guy we want to be around here.โ
Jones also admitted thatย Frederickโs next deal will almost certainly end up being a โsignificant contract.โ
โObviously Travis is a Pro Bowler and great player and certainly itโll be a significant contract,โย Jones added.ย โObviously Iโll confirm that, but weโll certainly look at all our guys who are up after this year.โ
This shouldnโt come as much of a surprise, considering that Fredrick has is among the best centers in the NFL.
Frederick, 25, was taken with the No. 31 overall pick back in 2013. Heโs currently in the final year of his four-year, $6.8 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary ofย $1,341,822 for the 2016 season.
The Cowboys elected to pick up his fifth-year option a few months ago, which will run the Cowboys $8.8 million in 2017. However, thisย is guaranteed only for injury and wonโt prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.
In 2015,ย Frederick appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and was rated by Pro Football Focusย as the No. 1ย centerย out of 39ย qualifying players.
