Colts Confident Andrew Luck Won’t Need Additional Shoulder Surgery

Update:

Colts GM Chris Ballard told reporters on Wednesday that they believeย Andrew Luck is in a good place and don’t think his shoulder will require additional surgery.

โ€œAt this point we feel very strongly that Andrew Luck is in a good place,โ€ Ballard said. โ€œWe donโ€™t believe he needs surgery.ย Weโ€™re very confident heโ€™s going to prove people wrong.โ€

Ballard added Luck is still in the process of strengthening his shoulder and has yet to pick up a footballย because they don’t want him to skip any steps in the process.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (per Adam Schefter) reported on Sunday that there still are doctors who have concerns about Colts QB Andrew Luck‘s shoulder and whether he could end up needing to undergo additional surgery.

This comes in contrast to a recent report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, who reported that Luck was “very close” to throwing and wasn’t expected to require another surgery on his shoulder.

According to Rapoport, Luck has been out in Los Angeles to work with throwing mechanics and strength gurus Tom House and Adam Dedeaux.

Luck traveled to Europe during the 2017 season to work on balancing his muscles and he returned bigger and stronger.ย Upon returning, Luck told reporters last month that he believes his shoulder feels stronger and more stable and he’s optimistic that no follow-up surgery will be needed.ย It’s worth mentioningย that Luck saidย he’s still not where he wants to be and his shoulder still isn’t 100 percent, but the pain has gone down “significantly.”

Luck reportedly saw between 4-5 doctors regarding his shoulder issues including the doctor who performed the original shoulder surgery and the consensus was that he shouldย stop throwing for 2-3 months and allow the injury to heal on its own.

Reports said Luck was told that playing through a labrum tear for two years messed up his shoulder and caused other issues while also messing with his throwing mechanics.

Luck, 28, is a former first-round pick of the Colts back in 2012. He’s currently in the second year of his six-year, $139.125 million contract that includes $87 million guaranteed and is set to make base salaries ofย $12 million and $9.125 million of $12 million over the next two year of the contract.

In 2016, Luck appeared in 15 games and thrown for 4,240 yards while completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.ย Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 4 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Luck’s return as the news is available.
