According to Armando Salguero, multiple league and team sources say the Dolphins gave Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa a passing grade on his physical at the NFL Combine.
Salguero adds the Dolphins are satisfied Tagovailoa is on track to recover from the dislocated hip that ended his 2019 season and threw a wrench in his draft process.
That’s significant as it clears a major hurdle that would prevent them from picking Tagovailoa. Salguero adds multiple sources have told him Tagovailoa is the favorite for Miami at No. 5 in the first round.
However, Salguero says the word is Miami is still unlikely to trade up from No. 5 overall given the questions around both Tagovailoa and Oregon QB Justin Herbert, who they’ve also studied extensively.
They’ve also seriously debated not selecting a quarterback and trying to trade back up for one later in the first round.
Miami has been linked to Tagovailoa for over a year now and could be a landing spot for him at No. 5 overall. The Dolphins attempted to bring him in for a pre-draft visit as well before the shutdown.
Tagovailoa, 21, is still expected to be a high first-round pick in this year’s draft, despite the serious hip injury he’s been working his way back from.
Dane Brugler has Tagovailoa rated as his No. 6 overall prospect.
Lance Zierlein compares Tagovailoa to former NFL QB Mark Brunell.
For his career, Tagovailoa has completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 7,442 yards, 87 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over the course of three seasons and 32 games. He has also rushed for 340 yards and nine touchdowns.
