Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Eagles signed RB Jay Ajayi to a contract that includes the right of first refusal for the team in 2020, which means Philadelphia can match any offer he receives from another team.
Basically, Ajayi will be a restricted free agent next year without draft compensation tied to losing him, as opposed to an unrestricted free agent for the second straight offseason.
The Eagles signed Ajayi to a contract last week after losing Darren Sproles for the season with a hip flexor injury.
Ajayi returned to the field for the first time since suffering a torn ACL last year.
Ajayi, 26, is a former fifth-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2015. He played out the final year of his four-year, $2.5 million contract and made a base salary of $1.9 million for the 2018 season.
The Eagles acquired Ajayi in a trade with the Dolphins that sent a 2018 fourth-round pick to Miami. He returned to Philadelphia last week.
In 2018, Ajayi appeared in four games for the Eagles and rushed for 184 yards on 45 carries (4.1 YPC) to go along with five receptions for 20 yards receiving and three touchdowns.
