Eagles S Malcolm Jenkins told reporters on Monday that he won’t play in 2020 without a new contract from the team.
โI wonโt be back on the same deal,” Jenkins said via Rob Maaddi. “That wonโt happen. The market is good for safeties now. I consider myself in the top tier.โ
Jenkins is entering the final year of a five-year, $40.5 million deal he signed with Philadelphia in free agency. He reported to offseason activities despite indicating his unhappiness with his current deal last year, but it appears he won’t handle the situation quietly in 2020.
Jenkins, 32, is a former first-round pick of the Saints back in 2009. He spent five years in New Orleans before signing on with the Eagles in 2014.
Jenkins is set to make a base salary of $7.75 million in the final year of his deal in 2020.
In 2019, Jenkins appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles and recorded 81 tackles, 2.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, one recovery and eight pass defenses. He’s rated by Pro Football Focus as the No 32 safety out of 89 qualifying players.
