Update:
Ralph Vacchiano reports that the Giants have not requested an interview with Cowboys HC Jason Garrett for their offensive coordinator job, despite the prior report. Instead, the Giants submitted the request for their head-coaching job before settling on Joe Judge.
According to Vacchiano, the Giants plan to allow Judge to hire his own staff.
According to Ed Werder, the Giants interview request for former Cowboys HC Jason Garrett is for the offensive coordinator position on new HC Joe Judge‘s staff.
As a former head coach, Garrett’s experience would be an asset for Judge, who formerly worked as the special teams coordinator for the Patriots. Garrett would also be tasked with developing QB Daniel Jones.
This clarifies New York’s interest in Garrett, as he had been linked to the Giants’ previous head coaching vacancy.
Though the Cowboys have hired Mike McCarthy to be their next head coach, Garrett is still technically under contract in Dallas through January 14, meaning the Giants have to request permission from the Cowboys for an interview.
Garrett, 53, began his NFL coaching career with the Dolphins back in 2005 as their quarterbacks coach. After two years in Miami, the Cowboys hired him as their offensive coordinator and he eventually worked his way up to head coach.
Over the course of his 10 years in charge of the Cowboys, Garrett led the team to a record of 85-67 (55.3 percent), which includes three playoff appearances.
