Johnny Manziel Signs Contract With The Spring League

Former Browns QB Johnny Manziel announced via his Twitter account on Wednesday that he has signed a contract with the Spring League.

Here’s a statement Manziel provided to TMZ Sports:

“The Spring League has provided me with a great opportunity to play ball again, and ultimately, that is all I want to do.”

“I miss the competition. I’d like to thank Brian Woods and The Spring League staff for this opportunity to play the game I love. I’ve made my share of mistakes, but I’m 25 years old and I know my best football is ahead of me.

The Spring League tells TMZ Sports of the move: “We believe our platform is the ideal forum for Mr. Manziel to enact his NFL comeback.

This offseason, Manziel nearly had an agreement in place with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL, but his self-imposed deadline passed without an agreement in place.

In recent days, Manziel had been making the rounds with media outlets discussing what had gone wrong for him in the past and what he has been doing to turn things around in the hope of getting one more shot in the NFL.

Manziel, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Browns back in 2014. He was in the second year of his four-year, $8,247,250 rookie contract when the Browns cut him loose at the start of the 2016 league year.

Manziel received a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on recreational drug and wound up sitting out the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

In 2015, Manziel appeared in nine games and thrown for 1,500 yards while completing 57.8 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Manziel also ran for 230 yards. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 31 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players that year.

We’ll have more regarding Manziel as the news is available.
