Report: Steelers Will Keep Both Drew Allar & Will Howard

Gerry Dulac of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers are planning to keep both quarterbacks, Drew Allar and Will Howard, on their 53-man roster this coming season.

Drew Allar

Dulac notes that the decision was made even before the team’s 17-0 preseason loss to the Jets.

Allar, 22, started three years at quarterback for Penn State. He could have declared for the NFL Draft after the 2024 season, but opted to return to Penn State. He then suffered a broken left ankle in October and subsequently underwent surgery, ending his final year of eligibility.

The Steelers used the 76th overall pick in the third round of the 2026 Draft on Allar.

He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $7,103,408. The deal includes a $1,775,852 average annual value and carries an $885,000 cap charge for the 2026 season.

For his college career, Allar had appeared in 44 games and completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 7,265 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He has also rushed for 707 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Howard, 24, was a four-star recruit out of West Chester, Pennsylvania, in the 2020 recruiting class. He committed to Kansas State and enrolled in February 2020.

After four years with Kansas State, Howard entered the transfer portal as a four-star prospect and committed to Ohio State, where he spent the 2024 season and led the Buckeyes to a National Championship.

The Steelers selected him in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year rookie contract with the team worth $4.4481 million, including a $248,100 signing bonus.

In his collegiate career, Howard appeared in 50 games over five seasons and completed 63.8 percent of passes for 9,796 yards, 83 touchdowns, and 35 interceptions. He also rushed 331 times for 1,147 yards and 26 touchdowns.

We will have more on the Steelers’ quarterback situation as it becomes available.
