Pete Prisco of CBSSports.comย reportsย that Maurice Jones-Drew‘s decision to skip the Jaguars’ย voluntary minicamp “has something to do with a new contract.”
Prisco adds team sources have mentioned that Jones-Drew has been talking about a new contract recently.
Jones-Drew led the league in rushing last year and although Prisco does praise the way he’s plays, he also points to some obvious concerns that the team will most likely consider before discussing a contract extension.
First, Jones-Drew has two years remaining on his deal. Second, he’s been used a lot in the last years and the fact that he’ll be 29 by the time he’s set to hit the free agent market, isn’t helping his chances any.
Jacksonville has brought in a new head coach in Mikeย Mularkey, so Jones-Drew will eventually have to learn a new system. Sitting out of training camp could create issues for him in the coming months.
