Packers & OLB Clay Matthews Have Discussed Extension

Packers veteran OLB Clay Matthews told reporters on Monday that they’ve discussed a potential contract extension that would keep him in Green Bay for the foreseeable future.

However, it remains to be seen whether they’ll be able to get something done.

โ€œMy agency and upstairs have had talks,โ€ Matthews said, via PackersNews.com. โ€œWeโ€™ll see where it goes. At the same time, Iโ€™ll just go out there and do my things and let the pieces fall where they may.

โ€œIโ€™ve been here going on 10 years, so Iโ€™d like to obviously add a few more to that. Iโ€™m not in control of that. All I can control is what I do on Sundays, and hopefully itโ€™s a big year.โ€

Matthews added that he still has “a lot of good football ahead of me.”

โ€œIโ€™ve got a good mind in how I envision this season and my future,โ€ Matthews said. โ€œSo weโ€™ll see what that holds, if that means back here for a few more years or packing my bags.

โ€œI still feel like Iโ€™ve got a lot of good football ahead of me. Hopefully, thatโ€™s here for a few more years.โ€

Matthews, 32, is a former first-round pick of the Packers back in 2009. He’s currently in the final year of his six-year, $69.73 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $10.4 million for the 2018 season.

Matthews is in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

In 2017, Matthews appeared in 14 games and recorded 43 tackles, 7.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a recovery and two pass defenses.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 edge rusher out of 107 qualifying players.
