Patriots Pick Up $3.7M Of Cap Room By Reworking Stephon Gilmore’s Deal

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Patriots recently restructured the contract of CB Stephon Gilmore and in turn picked up just over $3.7 million of cap space. Pelissero notes that New England didn’t touch the future years of Gilmore’s contract.

The Patriots were pretty close to the cap, so gives them some room to work with for the remainder of the 2018 season.

Gilmore, 28, was taken with the No. 10 overall pick by the Bills back in 2012. He played out his rookie contract, but the Bills elected to pick up his fifth-year option for the 2016 season.

Gilmore would later depart for a five-year, $65 million contract that includes $31 million guaranteed with the Patriots. He stands to make base salaries of $8.5 million and $9.5 million over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Gilmore has appeared in six games for the Patriots and recorded 22 tackles, one interception, a forced fumble and eight pass defenses.
