Rams HC Sean McVay told reporters on Wednesday that they’re still in talks with CB Jalen Ramsey’s agent, David Mulugheta, regarding a long-term extension.
โI think those are things that we are working through,โ McVay said, per Jourdan Rodrigue. โHeโs got a great agent that has been really good to work with. Obviously, Jalen is focused on playing football. Those are things that we are trying to handle kind of behind the scenes, if you will. But I think one thing we all know is Jalen is so refreshingly secure in himself and confident that it would be great if it gets done, but also you know this guy is not going to be distracted by what is or isnโt done. Heโs going to go out and try to continue to demonstrate why heโs the best in the league at what he does.โ
McVay says he’s not worried about how the uncertainty regarding Ramsey’s contract will impact him this season.
โI have concerns about a lot of things in this world,โ McVay said, โbut Jalen is one of those guys โ I think you guys have gotten a feel for โ I donโt get the feeling that heโll let anything really deter from his ability to play football. Heโs the epitome of a competitor and I donโt see that being an issue. But it is something that weโd like to be able to work through.โ
Ramsey is playing out the fifth-year option on his contract, which the Jaguars picked up before trading him to Los Angeles last year. Rams GM Les Snead said at the NFL Combine in February that there was no timetable on an extension for Ramsey.
However, it would be tough for the Rams to allow him to walk in 2021 after trading a huge haul, including two first-round picks, to Jacksonville at the deadline last year.
Back in October of last year, Ramsey reportedly promised Los Angeles that he would not hold out in 2020 even if the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement.
However, if the two sides can’t reach a long-term deal and the Rams use the franchise tag on Ramsey, all bets are off and he could hold out at that point.
Ramsey, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Jaguars back in 2016. He signed a four-year, $23.35 million contract and is set to make a base salary of $3.63 million in 2019.
The Jaguars picked up Ramsey’s fifth-year option that will cost them around $13 million for the 2020 season before trading him to the Rams last year for two first-round picks and a fourth-round selection.
In 2019, Ramsey appeared in 12 games for the Jaguars and Rams and recorded 50 tackles, one interception, two forced fumbles and five passes defended.
