Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News reports that Giants DE Robert Ayers sufferedย a tornย pectoral muscle during Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars.
- Samuel adds that this injury will endย Ayers’ 2014 season.
The Giants are coming off of a demoralizing loss, but this is equally disappointing news Ayers has put together a very impressive campaign this year and has proven to be one of the better free agent acquisitions.
Ayers, 29, signed aย two-year, $4 million contractย that included $1.75 million guaranteed with the Giants back in April. He has a base salary ofย $1.23 million coming his way for the 2015 season.
Assuming this is it for Ayers in 2014, he will have finished the year withย 22 tackles, five sacks, one forced fumble and a pass defense over the course of 12 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 4 defensive end in a 4-3 system due to a very impressive pass rush rating.
