According to Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report, there is “no movement” between the Chiefs and QB Alex Smith regarding a contract extension.
- Cole mentions that the two sides cannot come to an agreement regarding the structure of the contract.
- Smith and his agent areย reportedly comfortable playing out his current deal given that he has made over $50 million already in his NFL career and he can afford to drag the process out.
- Chiefs HC Andy Reid reportedly loves Smith and would like to keep in him place as his starter moving forward, so there could be some internal debate within the organization, according to Cole.
- Cole could see Kansas City franchising Smith and continuing to negotiate an extension well into the 2015 offseason.
Smith mentioned no too long ago thatย he hasย no interest in signing a similar contract toย the oneย Andy Daltonย received from the Bengals a few weeks ago.
“I want to get something that’s right that I’m going to play out, absolutely, and that’s definitely a focus of mine,” Smith said, viaย USA TODAY.
“We’re on the record. That’s a tough question,” Smith said in response to whether or not he would sign Dalton’s contract if the Chiefs offered it. “Certainly, I think it’s a tough thing. I look at both Andy and Kap and they’re both on their rookie deals. They’re both second-round picks in the new rookie wage scale, so what were their salaries? It’s a very different situation for me.”
Dalton’s extension adds six years to his current deal and will give him the opportunity to make as much as $115 million in total. Although, it’s unlikely that he’ll come close to receiving all of the money included in this contract.
The situation between the Chiefs should be fascinating to watch in the coming months as Smith is in line to be the best available quarterback next year and there are questions about all of the team’s current backup options.
The franchise tag will be costly for the Chiefs, but it would at least buy them more time to work out a long-term agreement.
Smith, 30,ย is entering the final year of his current deal and will make $7.5 million for the 2014 season.
In his first season with the Chiefs, Smith led them to playoffs and played great in their first-round matchup against the Colts. ย Smith also set career highs in passing yards with 3,313, rushing yards (431) and touchdowns (23) while only throwing seven interceptions.
