Report: Raiders Also Have Interest In Henry Melton & B.J. Raji

Vic Tafur reports that the Oakland Raiders also have interest in free agent DT Henry Melton and B.J. Raji.

  • Tafur still expects Melton to sign with the Cowboys.

Reports from earlier in the day mentioned that the Raiders are meeting with DE Justin Tuck and OLB LaMarr Woodley on Wednesday, so it appears as though they are making a concerted effort to improve their offense and defensive lines next year.

Melton was considered one of the better interior lineman in the league after posting 13 sacks combined in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.  A converted running back at the University of Texas, Melton played the crucial “under-tackle” position in the Bears  defensive front, which requires a quick, penetrating interior presence.

Melton’s value has taken a hit, after tearing his ACL in the third game of this season.  He is expected to be ready to practice by May, but the injury raises questions about his ability to maintain his quickness.  Additionally, Melton was arrested on December 21st for assault and public intoxication, which may also hurt his value.

Raji, 27, reportedly turned down a contract extension that would have paid him $8 million annually last year. He hasn’t record a single sack since 2011, although that could have something to do with the Packers approach towards their defensive linemen. Even so, it’s not a very marketable stat for a guy who is heading into free agency.

We have both players listed in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
