ESPN’s AFC North Blogger Jamison Hensley believes that Steelers running back Jonathan Dwyer should be the team’s starting back even when running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman return from injury.
“Now, after what Dwyer has shown the past two games, the Steelers don’t have a decision at starting running back. They can’t take the ball back from Dwyer,” Hensley wrote. “He’s breaking long gains. He’s delivering the key run at the end of games. You have to keep feeding the ball to Dwyer until his play tells you otherwise.”
It should come as no surprise that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin wouldn’t say anything definitive regarding the team’s starting RB if they all are healthy for next week’s game. Dwyer has been great while filling in for Mendenhall and Redman, rushing for over 100 yards in back-to-back starts, something that hasn’t been done since Willie Parker did it in 2008. Since the start of the 2011 season, the Steelers are 10-0 when they rush for more than 100 yards and 6-7 when they can’t break the century mark on the ground.
We’ll know more about the Steelers running back situation when Tomlin has his Tuesday press conference.
