Steelers Sign LB Jayrone Elliott, Waive/Injured DL Lavon Hooks

The Steelers announced Thursday they have signed LB Jayrone Elliott to the 90-man roster.

In a corresponding move, Pittsburgh waived DL Lavon Hooks with an injury designation.

Hooks suffered an Achilles injury in practice recently. He will revert to Pittsburgh’s injured reserve list if he clears waivers.

Elliott, 27, wound up signing on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out Toledo back in 2014. He played out the final year of his three-year, $1,535,000 rookie contract with the Packers but did not receive a restricted offer from the team.

Elliott re-signed with the Packers in 2017 but was traded to the Cowboys at the start of the regular season for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2018. Dallas elected to cut Elliott loose after a few weeks.

Elliott caught on with the Saints on a futures deal for 2018. He was waived at the end of the preseason, however.

Elliott played for the San Antonio Commanders and led the now-defunct AAF in sacks, which earned him a shot with the Dolphins in April. Miami waived Elliott in July.

In 2016, Elliott appeared in 11 games for the Packers and recorded 19 tackles and sack.
