Texans Have Had Preliminary Extension Talks With Deshaun Watson

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that the Texans have engaged in “very preliminary“ discussions with QB Deshaun Watson regarding a potential contract extension.

The Texans just locked up LT Laremy Tunsil to a record contract and Werder says Watson is the team’s next priority.

Werder says Houston is hoping to reach an agreement with Watson before the start of the season.

Reports have said that Watson and Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes are in line for record-breaking extensions and deals could be in place this offseason, so this is clearly something to watch in the coming months.

In fact, some estimates have said Mahomes could secure as much as $40 million per year.

It will be interesting to see if Watson waits until the Chiefs sign Mahomes long-term before agreeing to a new deal with the Texans.

Watson, 24, was taken in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Texans. He signed a four-year, $13.854 million with the Texans and will make a base salary of $1.17 million for the 2020 season.

The contract also includes a fifth-year option for the Texans to pick up in 2021.

In 2019, Watson appeared in 15 games for the Texans and completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,852 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 413 yards and seven touchdowns.

We’ll have more regarding the Texans and Watson as the news is available.
