According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Rams are still expected to split carries between Todd Gurley and C.J. Anderson in Super Bowl LIII.
Rapoport says that this decision is based on a variety of factors, including Gurley’s knee and his conditioning.
Rams RBs coach Skip Peete explained to Rapoport that they informed Gurley of their plan to manage his workload a few weeks ago.
“We said, ‘Going forward, we got to make sure you’re fresh, you’re healthy,” Peete said on the RapSheet and Friends podcast. “The workload that you had prior to you sitting out, probably can’t go that route right now. He understood that. He played. It’s just his touches weren’t what they had normally been.”
“If you look at a guy who hasn’t really practiced in two or three weeks, then all of the sudden has to go out there and play (in the playoffs), the cardio isn’t where it needs to be to play 60 or 70 plays,” Peete added. “And that’s what he had been doing before he sat out. You need to kind of work him back where you put him in situations where it makes sense. That happened in the Dallas game, and I thought he did some things in the last game.”
Sources have told Rapoport that the Rams are interested in re-signing Anderson next year.
Gurley, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Rams back in 2015. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $13.823 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $2.31 million for the 2018 season when the Rams picked up his fifth-year option back in April.
Gurley later agreed to a new four-year extension worth $60 million and includes $45 million guaranteed with the Rams this past summer.
In 2018, Gurley appeared in 14 games for the Rams and rushed for 1,251 yards on 256 carries (4.9 YPC) to go along with 59 receptions for 580 yards receiving and 21 total touchdowns.
