Agent Bob LaMonte Terminating Relationship With Josh McDaniels After Backing Out On Colts

Dan Graziano of ESPN reports that Josh McDaniels‘ agent, Bob LaMonte, who also represents Colts GM Chris Ballard and many other coaches and executives around the league is terminating his relationship with McDaniels.

According to Graziano, LaMonte was stunned Tuesday when McDaniels informed him that he was staying in New England as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator. LaMonte reportedly told McDaniels that he was “committing professional suicide.”

Earlier in the day, Mike Garafolo reported Lamonte told McDaniels that he was making “perhaps the biggest professional mistake of his career by backing out of this Colts job at this point.”

There was talk that this move could be coming, given the issues McDaniels’ decision was going to create for him moving forward with his other clients.

Interestingly enough, Mike Florio pointed out Tuesday night that LaMonte represented both former Raiders HC Jack Del Rio and their new HC John Gruden, so there are plenty of conflicts of interest around the NFL relating to matters such as this.

McDaniels ultimately decided that the Patriots were his best option, even though he had a verbal agreement with the Colts to become their head coach. There’s already a great deal of speculation that McDaniels could be groomed to take over for Bill Belichick once he’s ready to retire.

Staying in New England long term is likely the best move for McDaniels now that he has likely burned serious bridges around the NFL for spurning the Colts.
