Bengals Hire Hue Jackson As Special Assistant To Head Coach

Update:

The Cincinnati Bengals announced Tuesday that they’ve hired Hue Jackson as a special assistant to HC Marvin Lewis.

“I have a great comfort level with Hue and his ability to assist me with the day-to-day responsibilities on defense,” Lewis said in a statement.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that former Browns HC Hue Jackson is slated to be in Cincinnati imminently to join the Bengals’ coaching staff.

However, Rapoport adds that Jackson’s title is not yet clear right now.

The Bengals made the decision to fire DC Teryl Austin. on Monday, which led to speculation that Jackson could be brought back, given that he’s one of HC Marvin Lewis‘ best friends in the NFL.

Lewis will take on more responsibility in terms of the Bengals’ defense, which opens leaves some room for Jackson to help on the offensive side of the ball.

Before Jackson accepted the Browns’ head-coaching job, there was actually talk about him being a potential successor to Lewis in Cincinnati, so it will be interesting to see how things play out with the Bengals next year.

Jackson, 53, began his NFL coaching career back in 2001 as the Redskins RBs coach. He worked for the Bengals, Falcons and Ravens before he was hired by the Raiders as their offensive coordinator in 2010.

Jackson was later promoted to head coach but lasted one season at the helm. After four years with the Bengals, Jackson was hired as the Browns head coach in 2016 but lasted just over three years in Cleveland.

During his time as the Browns’ head coach, Jackson led them to a record of 3-36-1 (8.8 percent) and no playoff appearances.
