Jarvis Landry Not Optimistic About Re-Signing With Dolphins

According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, Dolphins free agent WR Jarvis Landry has been suggesting to friends that he’s more likely to be playing elsewhere next season.

A source familiar with the situation tells Beasley that there’s is a “bit of resignation in Landry’s circle that he will be playing for another team in 2018.

Beasley reports that Landry has told associates that he is not optimistic that the long-term deal with the Dolphins. Part of this is due to the recent report that detailed some of the Dolphins’ frustration with him as a player and teammate.

Landry later said that negotiations with the Dolphins regarding a new contract have been “handled a bit disrespectful.”

Landry is believed to be seeking a similar contract to the four-year, $58 million deal signed by Packers WR Davante Adams a few weeks ago. However, league sources have told Beasley that Landry is unlikely to come close to the $14-$15 million per year he’s seeking and may instead have to accept closer to $10 million per year.

Landry’s agent, Damarius Bilbo, recently made it clear in an interview with Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post that his client will not be taking a hometown discount to return to Miami next season.

“How long has this franchise been around?” Bilbo said Wednesday. “It’s always going to be here. Take a discount? Absolutely not. This may be Jarvis’ first and last time to set himself up and his family up. He needs to strike and strike while the iron is hot. Plenty of guys that were drafted ahead of Jarvis have not performed to his level. Look at Jarvis’ performance level. If you want to compare him to the T.Y. Hiltons and the Doug Baldwins, those deals were done two or three years ago. It’s his time now. He’s next man up.”

It’s worth mentioning that the Dolphins will have the franchise tag at their disposal next year. Although, that is projected to run them $15,682,000 fully guaranteed for the 2018 season.

Landry, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2014. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $3.5 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $893,852 for the 2017 season.

In 2017, Landry has appeared in 16  games and caught 112 passes for 987 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. He has also contributed 81 kick return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 19 receiver out of 119 qualifying players.
