Panthers Place DE Charles Johnson On Short-Term I.R.

The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that they’ve placed DE Charles Johnson on injured reserve with the designation to return.

This comes just a day after the Panthers agreed to trade for veteran DE Jared Allen, who will likely step into Johnson’s role on their defensive line.

The expectation has been that Johnson was likely to miss several weeks with a hamstring injury, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Johnson will now be out eight weeks.

Johnson, 29, is in the fifth year of his six-year, $76 million contract that included $32 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $9.75 million this year and another $10.75 million in 2016 as part of this agreement.

This season, Johnson has appeared in all three games and recorded five tackles and a sack for the Panthers.
