Patriots OC Josh McDaniels Expected To Take A Head Coaching Job

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe expects Patriots OC Josh McDaniels to take a head coaching job this offseason.

Beyond that, Volin writes there is talk about McDaniels and Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo signing somewhere in a package deal. However, a prospective team’s ownership, organizational structure, and talent on their roster are higher priorities for McDaniels than coaching Garoppolo on a new team.

Volin believes the Jaguars is the best job currently available for McDaniels, while the Cardinals would be another intriguing option should they move on from HC Bruce Arians.

At this point, it wouldn’t be surprising in the least for the Jaguars to target a head coach who could help turnaround QB Blake Bortles, who has regressed this season.

Volin does not think McDaniels would sign with another AFC East team this offseason, nor a Patriots’ rival like the Indianapolis Colts.

McDaniels, 40, began his NFL coaching career with the Patriots as a personnel assistant back in 2001. He worked his way up to offensive coordinator in New England before he departed for the Broncos head-coaching job in 2009.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go very well for McDaniels with the Broncos and he was fired during his second year with the team.

After a brief stint with the Rams as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, McDaniels returned to the Patriots and has been running their offense ever since.

We’ll have more regarding McDaniels and his possible head coaching candidacy as the news is available.
