Report: 2014 Salary Cap Could Be As High $130M

Albert Breer of the Network reports that although the early projections regarding the 2014 salary cap were around $126.3 million, this figure is a “lowball number” that teams use to budget for next season.

Breer adds that the final cap figure is still open to “negotiations and machinations” thru the NFLPA, and actual cap figure could come close to $130 million.

• According to Breer, the players association negotiated a “TV-heavy equation” for future cap years, which could boast the salary cap as early as 2015.
• The NFL owners negotiated the deal so that the caps would rise over the course of the agreement.
• Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk mentioned on Wednesday that the recent agreement between the NFL and CBS regarding a new Thursday Night TV deal could end up boosting the 2015 NFL salary cap by a few million dollars as well.

Jason Cole of the National Football Post reported a little over a week ago that the NFL Players Association was weighing whether or not to activate an option that would increase the 2014 cap space of each NFL team by $2 million.

Although NFLPA spokesman George Atallah confirmed that the option exists, he wouldn’t say whether or not this was an option they were actually considering at this point in time.

Last year, the cap was $123 million, which means NFL teams could as much as $7 million more available to them this offseason.

We’ll have to see where things are following the owners meeting in coming weeks before we have a better idea each team’s cap situation as they head into the offseason.
