Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network is reporting that Patriots G Joe Thuney is in “huge demand” and will have a big free agent market in the coming weeks.
According to Pauline, there are 20 teams that have shown interest in Thuney and the belief right now is that he will end up securing a lot more money than initially expected. In fact, Pauline says there will be a bidding war to sign him.
Earlier in the day, Jeff Howe of the Athletic reported Thuney is expected to command $14-$15 million per year as a free agent on the open market this year, which could make him the highest-paid guard in the NFL, depending on where the final number ends up.
The expectation has been that Thuney will test the open market and could end up pricing himself out of New England.
Thuney, 27, was drafted by the Patriots in the third round out of N.C. State in 2016. He signed a four-year, $3.538 million rookie deal and made a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2019, Thuney started all 16 games for the Patriots. He was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 5 guard out of 80 qualifying players.
We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
