49ers Declining OLB Elvis Dumervil’s 2018 Option, Pick Up LB Dekoda Watson’s

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they’re declining to pick up OLB Elvis Dumervil’s contract option for the 2018 season. The 49ers will, however, pick up their option on LB Dekoda Watson.

  • San Francisco also tendered exclusive rights free agent RB Raheem Mostert.

Here’s the statement from 49ers GM John Lynch:

“I want to thank Elvis for everything he contributed to our team last year both on the field and throughout our building,” Lynch said. “Not only did he bring a great deal of veteran leadership to our locker room at a time of significant change, but he provided a spark to our defense. Although Elvis isn’t in our current plans, we would never close the door on a potential return in the future. As a long-time friend, I wish him and his family well.”

Dumervil, 34, is a former fourth-round pick of the Broncos back in 2006. He spent six years in Denver before signing a five-year, $26 million contract that included $8.5 million guaranteed with the Ravens back in 2013.

Baltimore cut him loose last year and would later sign a two-year, $8 million contract that included $1.5 million guaranteed with the 49ers and he was set to make a base salary of $2.75 million for the 2018 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing will Dumervil free up $3.5 million of available cap space while creating $750,000 in dead money.

In 2017, Dumervil appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers and recorded 13 tackles and 6.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 50 edge rusher out of 106 qualifying players.
