Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, citing multiple team and league sources, reports that Baylor HC Matt Rhule is the “early favorite” to replace Pat Shurmur as Giants’ head coach.
According to Vacchiano, the Giants owners “like him a lot” and have been enamored with him since his one year as a Giants assistant back in 2012.
“He’s got an NFL mind and well-run program and seems to have every small detail covered,” an NFL scout previously told Vacchiano. “He’s got a little Coughlin in him. The Giants will like that.”
Vacchiano spoke to an NFL source who knows Rhule who said he will likely be interested in the Giants’ job, but it remains to be seen what other opportunities he’ll have.
The Panthers reportedly have interest in interviewing Rhule as well.
Rhule, 44, began his coaching career at Albright as a linebackers coach back in 1998. He worked for a number of schools including Buffalo, Western Carolina, UCLA and Temple before being hired by the Giants as an assistant offensive line coach for the 2012 season.
Rhule returned to Temple as head coach in 2013 and spent four years in the position before being hired as the new head coach at Baylor in 2017.
During time has a head coach, Rhule’s teams at Temple and Baylor produced a record of 47-42 (52.8 percent) and four bowl appearances.
We’ll have more on the Giants’ coaching search as the news is available.
