Broncos Prepared To Fire HC Vance Joseph, Still Interested In John Harbaugh

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Broncos are prepared to relieve HC Vance Joseph of his duties after the season.

League sources have told La Canfora that Denver was hopeful of interviewing Ravens coach John Harbaugh if he became available. However, Harbaugh is working on a new contract extension with the Ravens and is expected to remain in Baltimore.

La Canfora mentions that Broncos executive Gary Kubiak has a growing role in the team’s front office and worked with Harbaugh in Baltimore as his offensive coordinator. Kubiak reportedly has a strong relationship with Harbaugh and supported the idea of hiring him as head coach.

Interestingly enough, La Canfora reports that the Ravens and Harbaugh haven’t had any contract negotiations up to this point and some rival execs are skeptical about whether the team would actually enter a situation where Harbaugh coached as a lame duck in 2019 and could then depart as a free agent in 2020.

Last week, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that barring a change of mind, Broncos VP John Elway is expected to fire Joseph after the season, so this doesn’t doesn’t come as a big surprise.

Joseph, 46, began his NFL coaching career with the 49ers as their assistant defensive backs coach back in 2005. He spent six years in San Francisco before joining the Texans as their DBs coach in 2011.

After three years in Houston and two more with the Bengals, Joseph was hired by the Dolphins as their defensive coordinator. The Broncos would hire him as their head coach a year later.

During his two years as Broncos head coach, Joseph has led the team to a record of 11-19 (36.7 percent) and no playoff appearances.

We’ll have more regarding Joseph’s future with the Broncos as the news is available.
